San Jose runs south from San Marco along the east bank of the St. Johns, with San Jose Boulevard as the spine and side streets that dead-end at the water. The tree canopy is old and thick: live oaks, laurel and water oaks, and big Southern magnolias. Magnolia leaves are the ones to watch. They are stiff, the size of a hand, and lie flat over a gutter outlet like a lid.
Spanish moss is the other local headache. Wind pulls clumps out of the oaks, they land in the trough, soak up water and hold everything else in place. Why the river side and the boulevard side behave differently
On the streets between San Jose Boulevard and the St. Johns, many lots fall gently toward the water and the soil is sandy with groundwater close to the surface in a wet summer. When a gutter overflows on one of these homes, the water has nowhere fast to go. It sits along the foundation and in the crawlspace vents of the older houses.
East of the boulevard, heading toward Philips Highway, the lots are flatter and the trees thinner. Those homes usually need cleaning less often, and the job is more about leaf volume than drainage. We price both the same way. The difference is how much time we spend on where the water lands once it leaves the downspout.

Can I clean the gutters on my San Jose house myself?
On a one-story ranch east of the boulevard, yes, if you are steady on a ladder. On a two-story river home or anything with a clay tile roof, hire it out.
The ground is the first problem on the river side. Sandy soil that stays wet after a summer storm lets one ladder foot sink while you are up top, so set the feet on a board or a paver and check them every time you move. The second problem is weight. Spanish moss soaked with rain comes out as wet debris, a dense mat, and pulling it from a full arm's length away is how people lose their balance.
Tile is a firm no for a homeowner. Old clay cracks under a knee as easily as under a boot, and a cracked tile at the eave lets water into the fascia, and the water damage starts long before you notice anything inside.
