A lot of older Westside houses never had full gutters. You will often see a single run over the front door, another over the carport, and nothing on the back. Can I clean the gutters on a one-story Westside block ranch myself?
Often, yes, if you set up with care. A one-story block house in Cedar Hills or Lakeshore with one run over the front door and another over the carport has about as simple a gutter system as you will find.
Start by looking up. On older Westside houses the power lines usually come in overhead, and the drop often lands at a side or back corner, sometimes right over the carport. Pick a ladder spot well away from it. If your ladder is aluminum, lay it down and walk it into place sideways instead of swinging it upright, because a metal rail that brushes the line will put current through you.
Do not stand on the carport roof to reach the gutter. A carport roof is often thin metal or low-slope roofing that was never built to hold a person. Work from the ladder, scoop the wet debris, laurel oak leaves and pine straw, into a bucket hooked on a rung, and move the ladder every few feet rather than reaching. Finish by running a hose into each downspout until it flows out the bottom at full force, and aim the extension away from the foundation.
